Stretch marks are fine lines that appear on the skin surface when it is under a stretching tension. You may not realize this but both men and women can be affected by it.
You tend to find that stretch marks appear most often on the tummy, butt, and thighs.
Some of the causes for stretch marks include:
- growth spurts during puberty
- sudden weight gain
Even sports that involve heavy lifting can result in stretch marks!
When they first appear they tend to be red or purple, although in time they gradually fade to a pearly white color.
Stretch marks are not a health threat, but I know some of you believe that they are a little unsightly.
However the good news is that there are plenty of ways, both internal and external that can help with restoring your skin firmness.
This is why I have put together these 6 simple steps to help you prevent stretch marks in the first place.
Stretch marks due to pregnancy
As soon as you become pregnant your first concern is the health and well being of your baby. However, it is also important that you look after yourself too.
Experts recommend you take care of your skin as early as possible during your pregnancy as this can prevent certain skin problems developing. Remember that hormonal fluctuations that occur after giving birth increases the risk of numerous skin conditions such as acne, blemishes, and stretch marks.
Since old stretch marks are harder to remove, try to treat them at an early stage as they respond better.
6 steps to prevent stretch marks
1. Exfoliate your skin.
Skin exfoliation helps to reduce the appearance of existing stretch marks and also prevent the appearance of new ones.
Don’t forget to moisturize your skin well after each exfoliation.
2. It is really important to massage your skin with lotions containing vitamin E, olive oil, cocoa butter or Shea butter.
Massage your skin at least twice a day and focus on the prone areas. For pregnant women this is breasts, tummy, thighs and buttocks.
If your skin is moisturized it is more elastic and therefore fights against stretch marks more effectively.
3. Drink plenty of water.
Really. It is really important to hydrate yourself.
This will keep your skin hydrated from the inside and help prevent stretch marks.
4. Eat a balanced diet.
Yes, I know it is common sense but it really does work!
Include as many fruits and vegetables as possible in your diet. Try eating ones that are packed with vitamin A and C. Having foods that are rich in zinc (fish, nuts) as well as proteins is also very beneficial.
A balanced diet really can help restore your skin’s firmness after you have given birth. It will also help you lose that baby weight you gained during pregnancy too. Win win!
5. Try to keep up a good skin care regime after you have given birth.
This will help avoid you developing acne or hyper pigmentation.
You need to make sure you thoroughly cleanse your face and apply an oil free moisturizer with a high sun protection factor afterwards.
6. Try to gradually lose your baby weight after giving birth as rapid changes in body shape will cause stretch marks to appear.
